Department of Shipbuilding  and Ship's Repair

                                     History

The Section (later – Department) of Shipbuilding in the Kherson branch of the National University of Shipbuilding, (named after Admiral Makarov), in Mykolaiv, trained future shipbuilding engineers from 1967 to 2003. The heads of the Section in different years were Mykola Soldatov (1973-1978), Yuri Petropavlov (1978-1988), Oleg Looginin (1988-1998), and Oleg Dudchenko (1998-2003).
Then, in 2003, by the Rector’s Order of the Ukrainian State Maritime Technical University of 19.03.2003, № 76 the Department of Shipbuilding was established. Professor, DSc. Oleksander Shchedrolosiev, Academician of the International Academy of Marine Science, Academy of Technology and Innovation, International Academy of Standardization became the head of the Department.

The Department of Shipbuilding offers a Bachelor’s Degree program in "Shipbuilding and Ocean Technology" and Specialist’s Degree programs in "Ships and Ocean Technology" and "Ship Hull Construction". After being awarded the Degree the gifted professionals have the opportunity to continue their research at the Postgraduate Courses of the National University of Shipbuilding.

The academic staff of the Department: DSc. Prof. Olexander V. Schedrolosev, Ph.D., Assoc. Prof. Yury K. Yaglitsky, Ph.D., Assoc. Prof. Roman Y. Korshikov, Senior lecturers: Olexander M. Uzlov, Sergey O. Yevtyeev, Lecturers: Vyaheslav V. Saveliev, Stanislav V. Terlych, Secretary Hanna T. Anhelyuk.

The distinguished professionals of the National University of Shipbuilding are also involved in the educational process of the Department.

The first engineers of "Shipbuilding and ship repairs" speciality obtained their degree in 1973, while the first graduation of Bachelors in Shipbuilding took place in 2000. Shipbuilding is a high-tech industry, one of the priorities in the economic development of our country. There are many shipbuilding and ship repairing companies, design bureaus and research organizations in our country; most of them are located in the southern region.

The Department has a positive experience of assigning students for future work at the end of 3-5 years of training, after undergoing technological practice at the shipyards. During the internship students have the opportunity to discover many interesting things about their future job and its prospects.

The curriculum of NUoS provides Bachelor, Specialist and Master’s Degrees in "Shipbuilding and Ocean Technology" within six specializations: computer-aided design and ship construction; computer-based design of a ship; yachting and small boats; international technical information in maritime activities; shipbuilding technology, organization and production management; and engineering and technology of ocean development. Because of the needs of the region the Department chose the specialization "shipbuilding technology, organization and production management" as this specialization best suits the shipyard activity of the region. Nowadays, the professionals of this profile are in great demand. Many graduates are employed at the Kherson and Mykolaiv shipyards at this time. The graduates of the Department are also in demand at the shipyards of South Korea, China, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Norway.

The academic staff of the Department participates in national and international scientific conferences, competitions, forums and exhibitions. They are winners of state awards and honors for scientific contribution to the development of science and industry. A monograph, 13 manuals for higher institutions (including 4 out of them with a stamp of the Ministry for Education and Science), and more than 100 publications in scientific journals were published over the past few years.

The investigation results of research and academic staff of the Department enhanced research areas and allowed a new level of national and international scientific and educational cooperation. For example, the scientists of the National University of Shipbuilding, experts from the Kherson State Plant "Pallada" and design engineers from CDB "Izumrud" created a new generation of advanced composite floating docks with high lifting power, which are competitive on the global shipbuilding market. The group of scientists, engineers and experts were awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology in 2007 for the creation, development and widespread application of these docks. A monograph "Design, Technology and Construction Organization of Composite Floating Docks" (the authors: DSc., Prof. O. Rashkovskyi, DSc., Prof. O. Schedrolosev, Ph.D. M. Slutskyi, s.lect. O. Uzlov) was later published. The academic staff of the Department is ready to implement innovations in higher education whilst keeping the proud traditions of the Kherson branch of the National University of Shipbuilding.
